With competition at an all-time high, it can be overwhelming to pick out the products that best suit you.

There used to be a day when buying electronics was as simple as going to a Best Buy or RadioShack, having a quick chat with a sales rep, and making a purchase. Now, with the explosion of online shopping and the sheer number of available options, it’s hard to tell which products are worth your time and, more importantly, your hard-earned money.

Cheap doesn’t mean quality

If an item is being sold at a deep, deep discount, it could mean one of two things. First, it’s a piece of equipment that was developed strictly to be sold at that low price. Second, it’s outdated or defective. With the speed at which technology moves, this is highly possible. Luckily, sites like selling affordable electronics without the hangups.

Don’t be afraid to buy used

There’s a big stigma around purchasing “secondhand” electronics. Is the product defective? Is it going to be scuffed and scratched? While these are all valid questions, buying used has a major advantage: affordability. If you don’t want to drop a grand on, say, the latest phone…don’t!

Try before you buy

Now, this doesn’t work for every product, but for items like phones, game consoles, and televisions, there are usually display units that allow you to get hands-on experience with the product. If that’s not possible, ask about a product’s return window. If you don’t like it, send it back.

Read the reviews

Product reviews are a great way to suss out quality electronics. Keep this in mind, though: If only a handful of people have an issue with a product, it could be a tech anomaly. If you’re seeing dozens of reviews mentioning the same problems? Run.

Make sure you have the right accessories

Charging cords? Check. HDMI cables that reach all your devices? Check. A cooling fan for that snazzy new gaming computer? Double-check. Moral of the story: Never be afraid to accessorize.

Don’t let shopping for electronics give you a massive headache. With these tips, finding exactly what you need – and at a good price – is easier than ever before.
